For the first time in nearly two years, the unmistakable energy of Shingi Katsvere is back in the Sables camp as they prepare for the 4th of May Kick off against Zambia at Harare Sports Club.
The dynamic backliner touched down in Zimbabwe on April 26th, setting the stage for a stirring homecoming as the national side prepares for the Battle of the Zambezi clashes against regional rivals Zambia and Botswana.
His return, however, is not just a fleeting visit — it’s a mission of purpose, driven by a deep yearning to reconnect with the game and the brotherhood that first shaped him.
“Rugby brought me home,” Katsvere says, a wide smile spreading across his face. “After two years away, I realised that there’s no place like it. This team is a family, and now felt like the right moment to come back and be part of something bigger again.”
The last time fans witnessed Katsvere in full flight was during the 2021 showdown against Burkina Faso, a memorable home fixture that left a lasting imprint on the young star.
“It was an amazing experience,” he reflects. “From the spirit we built in camp to the memories made on the field, playing at home with the Sables is something I’ll always treasure.”
Injury would cruelly interrupt Katsvere’s journey, sidelining him for an extended period and forcing him into a new kind of battle — one fought far away from the spotlight. Over the past two years, he has dedicated himself to rebuilding, refocusing, and returning stronger.
“It’s been a long road,” he admits. “There were setbacks, but I used that time to reshape myself physically and mentally. I’ve been pushing every day to stay competitive and to be the best version of myself, not just for rugby, but for everything I stand for.”
Now, the chance to don the revered Sables jersey once again is stirring deep emotions within him.
“It’s an absolute blessing,” Katsvere says. “It’s an honour that not everyone gets, and for me, it’s something emotional too — it reminds you just how privileged you are to represent your people.”
While sidelined, Katsvere kept a close eye on Zimbabwe’s remarkable 2024 season, a year that saw the Sables sparkle with new talent and thrilling performances.
“I was so proud watching the boys,” he says. “There’s so much talent in the team right now — it’s exciting to think about what’s coming next.”
Looking ahead to a critical 2025 campaign, one which includes two highly anticipated home matches, Katsvere is clear-eyed about what the team needs to succeed.
“Trust in the process. That’s the key,” he emphasises. “When everyone buys into the system, it works. If we stay the course and believe in the coaches and each other, good things are going to happen for Zimbabwe rugby.”
