In a year where Zimbabwean sport came roaring back to life, one story has captured the imagination of a nation — the triumphant resurgence of the Sables.

Zimbabwe’s beloved national rugby team, along with its trailblazing referees and standout international stars, has been shortlisted in a record-breaking four categories at the 2024 Annual National Sports Awards (ANSA).

It’s a thrilling testament to a season built on grit, strategy, and an unshakable national spirit.

The Sports and Recreation Commission this week confirmed the nominations: Team of the Year, Coach of the Year (Pieter Benade), People’s Choice (Tapiwa Mafura), and a Special Acknowledgement Award for Precious Pazani — one of Africa’s most influential female referees. For Zimbabwean rugby, this isn’t just a recognition — it’s a revolution.

While 2023 sparked hope, 2024 lit a wildfire.

Fuelled by a rejuvenated technical bench and the unwavering support of the Sables Trust, the team delivered performances that rekindled memories of their 1980s heyday — and won back the hearts of fans and critics alike.

The highlight? A commanding 29-3 win over Algeria in the Africa Cup final in Uganda, after breaking a 21-year curse with a thrilling semi-final victory against arch-rivals Namibia. The Sables combined tactical brilliance with raw flair — announcing their comeback in style.

The team made history by touring Dubai and South Korea — becoming the first African side to set foot on Korean soil. That journey didn’t just make headlines; it made careers. Two of Zimbabwe’s rising stars, Dylan Utete and Brendon Mudzekenyedzi, landed professional contracts with Korean premiership clubs — a powerful symbol of the doors the Sables are now opening.

This unforgettable season also saw Zimbabwe climb to its highest World Rugby ranking in over a decade — a signal to the world that the giants of African rugby are back.

Team manager Takunda Chifokoyo, speaking from Harare, captured the spirit of the moment:
“This recognition is for every Zimbabwean who stood by us — who cheered, believed, and never gave up. It’s proof of what’s possible when we plan with purpose, play with passion, and unite as one. Being nominated for Team of the Year is a huge honour — but our journey is far from over.”
