As the Lady Sables prepare for the Rugby Africa Division One Tournament in Ivory Coast next month, Skumbuzo Muchenje is one player whose story shines with both determination and grace.

Popularly known as Sku, a stalwart of the game and a seasoned tight-head prop with the added option of number eight, has once again turned her focus toward the sport she holds dear.

Having captained False Bay in 2023, the University of Cape Town from 2018 to 2020, and the Zimburu Titans in Zimbabwe, Muchenje’s return to the national fold is a moment of both excitement and anticipation.

When asked what had inspired her to rejoin the rugby world after a brief hiatus, Muchenje was quick to clarify, “I wouldn’t say I had retired, but rather, I had taken some much-needed time off due to various personal commitments and circumstances.”

After relocating back to Zimbabwe a year ago, she found herself reflecting on her past accomplishments and her desire to return to the game.

“Once I was settled back here, it was clear to me that I had more to offer the sport,” she says. “I knew I could come back and contribute once again.”

Her return, though, has been marked not just by a rekindling of passion, but by a quiet resolve to improve.

“I have worked diligently to refine my overall rugby IQ, ensuring that I continue to grow both as a player and a leader,” Muchenje shares.

“Alongside that, I focused on my fitness and ball skills, eager to ensure that I remain competitive at the highest level.”

However, it wasn’t solely the physical that Muchenje sought to improve. Her time off gave her the opportunity to reflect deeply on what her place in the team might be, particularly considering the diversity of ages and experiences within the squad.

“I thought it important to understand how best I could serve the team, and how my experience could be of use in guiding the younger players. It’s about finding where you can contribute most,” she remarks thoughtfully.

Living in Zimbabwe, Muchenje has learned to balance the demands of rugby with the obligations of daily life.

“It is never easy to find perfect balance,” she admits. “But one must always strive to manage time wisely. Discipline and commitment are crucial. I ensure that I give my full attention to rugby when the time comes, whilst meeting my other obligations.”

As the Lady Sables look ahead to the upcoming tournament, Muchenje’s hard work and unwavering dedication have not gone unnoticed.

She was recently named in the extended provisional squad for the Rugby Africa Division One Tournament by head coach Nsikelelo Sibanda.

To Muchenje, this opportunity is more than a chance to play again—it is a chance to represent her country once more, an honour she holds dear. “The thought of pulling on the national jersey again fills me with pride.

To potentially return to the international stage and contribute to the Lady Sables’ success is a privilege,” she says, her voice imbued with quiet anticipation.

As the tournament draws near, Skumbuzo Muchenje’s return to rugby is a testament to her passion, discipline, and resilience. Her story is one of dedication, both to the sport and to her country.

As the Lady Sables prepare to take on the challenge in Ivory Coast, there is little doubt that Muchenje’s presence will lend strength to the team, ready to face the challenges that lie ahead with unwavering determination and the hope of a triumphant return to the international rugby arena.
