
[Harare, Zimbabwe] – [20 March, 2025] The Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) extends its heartfelt congratulations to Honourable Kirsty Coventry, Minister of Youth, Sports, Arts and Recreation, on her historic election as the 10th President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
This landmark achievement, announced by the IOC today, marks a significant milestone for Zimbabwe, Africa, and women in sports leadership globally.
Minister Coventry’s election, achieved through a secret ballot at the 144th IOC Session in Costa Navarino, Greece, signifies the global recognition of her exceptional leadership, dedication to sports, and unwavering commitment to the Olympic Movement.
As the first woman and the first African to hold this prestigious position, she has shattered barriers and inspired generations.
Her assumption of office on Olympic Day, June 23rd, following the handover from outgoing President Thomas Bach, will usher in a new era of leadership for the IOC.
The ZRU acknowledges Minister Coventry’s remarkable journey, from a young athlete to a global sports leader, and her commitment to upholding the values of the Olympic Movement.
