[Source: Brandon Moyo for The Chronicle] – The Junior Sables triumphed with a 39-32 victory against the visiting Outback Barbarians of Australia at Hartsfield Rugby Stadium in Bulawayo.

This match displayed a determined performance from the former African youth champions.

The crowd was left with optimism about the future of Zimbabwean rugby.

Junior Sables coach Shaun de Souza emphasized the team’s focus on the match itself.

“We went into the match with a clear target, working on our defence as part of our preparations for the 2025 Barthes Trophy,” said de Souza.

“Today’s game was about focusing on key areas, like defence and set pieces.”

“We were looking to build on last year’s loss in the Barthes Trophy.”

“It wasn’t about the scoreboard for us; it was about the small key areas we were focusing on that would lead to a good result.”

“That wasn’t the plan, but we’ll take the win and move on to the next step.”

As the first half drew to a close, Shammah Jackson’s timely intercept try narrowed the gap, leaving the score at 20-21 in favor of the Barbarians at halftime.

The second half saw the Barbarians push forward again, extending their lead to 20-28. But Zimbabwe wasn’t done yet. Ethan Chiponda and Phillip Chimhaka both crossed for tries, with Tatenda Kambvumbi adding a conversion to put the Junior Sables ahead 32-28.

Not to be outdone, the Barbarians responded with another try, but Tafara Dewa’s brilliant effort, converted by Rusike, sealed the 39-32 victory for the Junior Sables in a thrilling finish.
